Flexible Respite

Our flexible respite service offers a range of options so your loved one can be cared for at home or at a day respite centre. Our ‘In-home Day Respite’ (either at your home or theirs) offers domestic assistance, personal care and a friendly home visiting service to older people living with dementia. Our ‘Community Access – Individual’ services provide structured group activities that help the elderly person to stay active and maintain social connections.

Carer Support Group

The So Wai Support Group is for Chinese carers of people living with dementia. The group is facilitated by the Dementia Care Advisor and Lead Coordinator of Hurstville Seniors Wellness Centre. The group runs on a principle of self help and support. Our monthly gathering provides an opportunity for carers to meet, share and support each other in their caring roles and get up-to-date information on dementia. Some of the group’s other activities include:

• Social outings

• Education and training related to the carer’s role and self-care, including informative talks and workshops on stress management and relaxation, aromatherapy, gentle exercise and other topics.

• Visits to service organisations

• Cooking demonstrations

• Skill sharing

What can a person living with dementia experience

It is important to understand how dementia can affect a person’s behaviour. Knowing what to expect can help you plan your care or care for your loved one.
Changes in behaviour can include:
  1. reduced or confused communication
  2. anxious or agitated states
  3. hallucinations and false ideas
  4. loss of inhibition
  5. aggression
  6. wandering
  7. depression
